WHEN I WAS 17, I took a summer job for a company in northern New Hampshire (for anonymity’s sake, let’s call this company “Smith & Jones”). After my first day of work, Smith & Jones informed me that it had over-hired for the summer and that my services would no longer be required. Though visibly annoyed, I thanked the owners for the opportunity and found another job busing tables in the Lakes Region for the summer.
