Practice Focus
Mike has built a substantial litigation practice since joining Sheehan Phinney in 1975. His work includes extensive trial experience, with special emphasis on stockholder and partnership disputes. His practice focus also concentrates on state tax litigation and intellectual property.
- Successfully represented corporate defendants in a claim against a major New Hampshire ski area owner, its directors and the acquiring company asserting breach of fiduciary duty in approving the acquisition, including obtaining an award for all attorneys’ fees to the defendants.
- Successfully represented a minority stockholder in obtaining injunctive relief against his removal as an officer, director and employee of a small, closely-held business, leading to a settlement giving our client a 50 percent interest in the corporation.
- Successfully represented a prevailing will contestant in persuading probate court to disallow a will executed by an Alzheimer’s patient.

- Litigated a dispute on behalf of a CGL policyholder with several CGL insurers for recovery of hazardous waste superfund site cleanup costs which lead to the recovery of virtually all cleanup costs by the policyholder.
- Served as the lead class counsel in a class action challenging the constitutionality of the New Hampshire Interest and Dividends Tax.

Mike has been repeatedly recognized by The Best Lawyers in America, in the area of Business Litigation, by his peers in a poll conducted by the New Hampshire Bar Association and published in New Hampshire Magazine (2003) in the “Complex Litigation” category, and Chambers USA as one of the most notable business litigation lawyers in New Hampshire. He was both admitted to the American College of Trial Lawyers and was named a New England Super Lawyer in 2007.
Memberships and Admissions
Mike is admitted to practice in New Hampshire and before the United States Supreme Court and is a member of the New Hampshire Bar Association. He is also a Fellow for the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Community Involvement
Mike has committed his time to a number of community organizations throughout the state. He is currently the Capital Campaign Chairman for the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance, Trustee and incoming Chairman of the Board for the Portsmouth Music Hall, and a member of the Portsmouth Antheneum. He has served on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Board of Advisors and is the New Hampshire Advisor Emeritus. Mike also is a former Director of the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and former Trustee of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and a National Council Member for the Strawberry Banke Museum. In addition, his service as a Director and Chairman of the Board of Child and Family Services of New Hampshire spanned nearly a decade.
